Pottery is one of the heritage activities in India, iconic elements of Indian art and a household cottage industry of Assam. Artisans are still using age old and traditional pottery wheels (locally called Chaak). Traditional pottery works has many shortcomings, related to health and drudgery. Work related health problems in terms of musculoskeletal disorders, muscular pain, etc. Many mechanized pottery wheels are available in the market. However, due to an inadequate supply of electricity and financial constraints, artisans could not avail of those technologies. RuTAG IIT Guwahati developed a solar powered potter’s wheel. Design is very much simple for women artisans in rural areas. Suitable for producing small decorative items as well as big earthen vessels. Production rate has been increased by 2-2.5 times.
